An introduction

Selection03
is the simple name of an exhibition of 10 video works (10 artists) extracted from the curatorial environment of VideoChannel, a virtual and physical project and initiative dealing the with theme of “memory and identity”. Selection 03 is chief-curated by Agricola de Cologne who selected works curators from different countries contributed to VideoChannel.

The selection shows how individually artists go down to essential questions of their being as a human while coming from most different artistic, cultural and geographical backgrounds.

All works is in common the use of a very intensive and reduced language in order to compress the essential of life in the small cover of the short time available.

The questions of memory and identity are very complex and can be related to most different fields, from cultural identity  Calin Dan is searching for in”Sample City”, aspects of gender identity in “Women-World” by Li Hyung Kim, “Infern Domèstic” by Empar Cubells and “No Title” by Margerida Paiva, spiritual identity Agricola de Cologne is exploring in his work “Truth- Paradise Found”, identity of perception in “Smoked” by Rafael Alcalà, various aspects of historical identity as manifested in the works “Time with Franz” by Dana Levy, “Colossus at the see” by Jens Salander, “SALT” by Christina McPhee and “Digital Snapshots” by Daniel Lo Iacono.

All artists is in common the search for new ways of representing, also by experimenting with the wide range of possibilities digital video offers.
The artists and art works:

    Title: Digital Snapshots (2:30), 2003
    [curated by Agricola de Cologne/Germany]
is a kind of docu-animation dealing with the correlation of digital manipulations
and candid documentary shots. It was produced as part of a Media Design diploma thesis from the University of Applied Sciences Mainz , Germany in 2003.
What does a moment look like? Can snapshots freeze a moment in time?
In DIGITALSNAPSHOT, motion fragments were captured and rearranged in a new visual context via unconventional digital manipulations. A long take camera movement cycle generates a unique “digital painting”.
In this case DIGITALSNAPSHOT enables the viewer to experience a virtual walk through a  beautiful park during summertime

    2.

  • Jens Salander/Mikael Strömberg (Sweden)
  • artist biography

The Colossus by the Sea (10:00), 2003
    [curated by Bjoern Norberg/Sweden]
The work is documenting the former NAZI recreation resort PRORA on the island of
Ruegen/Baltic Sea and the difficulties how to deal properly with this “heavy” heritage.

    3.

  • Christina McPhee (USA)
  • artist biography

    SALT (9:26) 2004
    [curated by Alex Haupt/Germany]
SALT is born of the 6.5 magnitude San Simeon earthquake of December 2003.
The night of the quake, I used low tech against high tech a miniDV Canon Ellura to record
the mass media¹s take on the destruction television’s six o clock line-up. Amid dismal
reportage, an antagonist appears, taking recordings. Her black silhouette tracks something
only she can hear, into white heat at Soda Lake, where I am discovered drawing in the dry
salt. The SALT edit folds in 2 second frames of the paintings and digital photographs of the
[Strike}/Slip installation. A hypologic dream makes sure you are sure you are seeing: so
SALT draws memory and the erases of memory by handmade digital remix of locative audio and video into a place both seen and difficult to remember. The brain tracks shock and the
aftermath in sharp flashes for storage in a communal amygdala, where the brain stores
trauma. SALT recalls the tale of Lot¹s wife who froze into a pillar of salt when she turned
back to gaze on the destruction of her city. Is the freeze frame a white-out revenge against
    remembering too well, too much?

    4.

  • Empar Cubells (Spain)
  • artist biography

    Infern Domèstic  (7:50) 2003
    [curated by videoraum.net Valencia/Spain]
The video is a metaphoric visualization of domestic violence.

    5.

  • Calin Dan (Romania)
  • artist biography

    Sample City (10:00), 2003
Through his video “Sample City”(2003), Calin Dan tries to recount the anthropological
dimension of a city situated at the crossroads between European identity and Jewish
diaspora, gypsy folklore and Stalinist aesthetics.

    6.

  • Dana Levy (Israel)
  • artist biography

    Time with Franz (10:00) 2003
    [curated by Agricola de Cologne/Germany]
Dana Levy met Franz during her stay in Austria. He invited her to his countryside home,
inherited from his family. There, she discovered boxes of old family photos, Nazi swastikas.
Being third generation of the Holocaust, she felt threat, anger, and fear. The movie
reflects the way the artist tries to overcome her mixed emotions. The past slowly gives way
to the present moment, and to the developing friendship with Franz, despite history. The
music is by Die Linzer Philharmonic, conducted by artist Hannes Langeder. The orchestra
players are all non professional. The result is an eerie out of tune classical music

    7.

  • Agricola de Cologne (Germany)
  • artist biography

    Truth – Paradise Found (3:00), 2004
    [curated by Melody Parker-Carter/Germany]
The video tells the story of the human desire to be as close to truth as possible. But who
ever will succeed while living a life dominated by the fast running time and endless searching? If there is any paradise, then monks or people really resting within themselves find a paradise close to truth close to GOD. But it is only truth people are believing in. Is there
    absolute truth?

    8.
    margerida paiva

  • Margerida Paiva (Portugal)
  • artist biography

    No Title (3:40) 2003
    [curated by Agricola de Cologne/Germany]
The video is an exploration about the mechanisms of surveillance, made in
this case by the main character who checks compulsively her behaviour.

    9.

  • Rafael Alcalá (Puerto Rico)
  • artist biography

    Smoke (3:00), 2003
[curated by Heidi J. Figueroa Sarriera  and Marianne Ramírez-Aponte/Puerto Rico]

Wasn’t smoking said to be dangerous?

    10.

  • Kim Yi Hyung (South Korea)
  • artist biography

    Wo-men, Wo-rld  (3:34), 2003
